Can You Put Peel and Stick Wallpaper Over Textured Walls?
Sometimes, but the type and depth of the texture matter. Peel and stick wallpaper performs best on a smooth, clean, properly cured wall. A very light texture may be workable with the right material and preparation, while deeper texture can affect both adhesion and appearance.
Why Does Wall Texture Matter?
Wallpaper adhesive bonds best when it makes broad, even contact with the wall. On a textured surface, the adhesive may touch only the raised areas. That reduced contact can cause edges to lift or panels to release over time.
Texture may also show through the wallpaper, particularly with thinner materials or when light shines across the wall from the side.
Can Peel and Stick Canvas Work on Light Texture?
Peel and Stick Canvas has a thicker, firmer construction than our Peel and Stick Fabric material, which may help minimize the appearance of subtle wall texture. For a lightly textured wall, we recommend testing a Canvas sample on the actual surface before ordering a full project.
When installing Canvas on light texture, ROMAN E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper may improve adhesion. Follow ROMAN’s peel and stick directions and spray the wall, one section at a time. An installation helper cannot compensate for heavy texture, loose paint, or an unsuitable wall.
When Is Texture Too Heavy?
Deep orange peel, knockdown finishes, strong ridges, grooves, and uneven plaster can prevent the adhesive from making adequate contact. Wallpaper might appear secure at first and then lift later. For these walls, smoothing the surface before installation is usually the more reliable approach.
If you do not plan to smooth the wall, contact us before choosing a material. A prepasted or traditional unpasted wallpaper may be an option for some projects, but those materials also require suitable wall preparation.
Test a Sample on Your Actual Wall
A sample lets you assess adhesion, color, and how much texture shows through the material. Apply it to the same painted surface where you intend to install the wallpaper. A successful sample test is helpful, although it cannot guarantee identical results across every part of a wall.

Prepare the Wall Before Installation
