How to Prepare Walls for Decals & Peel and Stick Wallpaper
Good wall preparation gives your wall decal or peel and stick wallpaper the best chance to adhere properly. Before installation, check the paint, clean the surface, evaluate the wall texture and allow the wall to dry completely.
Important: No cleaning procedure can repair loose paint, eliminate heavy wall texture or guarantee compatibility with every paint formula. When compatibility is uncertain, test the selected material on the actual wall before installing a complete design.
Check the Paint Before Cleaning
The paint must be firmly bonded to the wall. Do not apply wall decals or peel and stick wallpaper over peeling paint, damp areas, damaged drywall or paint that rubs off during gentle cleaning.
Wait at least six weeks after painting before installing peel and stick wallpaper or wall decals. Paint may feel dry to the touch before it has completely cured. Installing adhesive wall decor too soon can contribute to bubbles, lifting or adhesive failure.
If you are unsure whether your paint is compatible, order a wall vinyl and self-adhesive fabric test sample and test it on the actual installation wall.
Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
- Clean, lint-free microfiber cloths
- Warm water
- A small amount of mild, residue-free dish soap when needed
- A clean towel for drying
- Isopropyl alcohol only after testing it on your paint
Avoid oily cleaners, furniture polish, wax, heavily fragranced products and cleaners that leave a protective coating. Residue left behind by a cleaning product may interfere with the adhesive.
How to Clean the Wall
Step 1: Remove Surface Dust
Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust, lint and loose particles from the complete installation area. Pay attention to corners, baseboards and areas above furniture where dust may collect.
Step 2: Clean Grease or Residue
If the wall has grease, fingerprints or visible residue, clean it with warm water and a very small amount of mild, residue-free dish soap. Use a clean cloth and avoid soaking the wall.
After cleaning, wipe the area again with a separate cloth dampened with clean water to remove any remaining soap.
Step 3: Test Before Using Alcohol
Some paint finishes can lose color or gloss when cleaned with alcohol, especially when the paint is not fully cured or firmly bonded to the wall. Test a small, inconspicuous area before using alcohol on the full installation surface.
If the test area remains unchanged, lightly wipe the installation area with a clean lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Do not saturate the wall.
Step 4: Allow the Wall to Dry
Allow the wall to dry completely and return to room temperature before applying a test sample, wall decal or wallpaper panel. Alcohol and water can temporarily cool the surface, so a wall that feels dry may still need additional time before installation.
Check the Wall Surface and Texture
Wall decals and peel and stick wallpaper adhere best to smooth, sound painted surfaces. Texture reduces the amount of contact between the adhesive and the wall.
- Smooth walls: Usually provide the strongest and most consistent adhesive contact.
- Lightly textured walls: May work depending on the material, paint and amount of texture. Test a sample first.
- Heavily textured walls: May not provide enough contact for reliable adhesion and generally should be smoothed before installation.
- Damaged or peeling walls: Must be repaired before wall decals or wallpaper are installed.

Test the Actual Installation Wall
Apply your test sample to a clean, inconspicuous area of the same wall where the full product will be installed. Testing a different room or wall may not provide the same result because paint, texture and environmental conditions can vary.
- Clean and dry the test area using the same process planned for the complete wall.
- Apply the sample and press it firmly against the surface.
- Leave it installed for several days.
- Inspect the edges and corners for lifting.
- Remove the sample carefully and confirm that the paint and material perform as expected.

If a Product Is Already Lifting
If a decal is already lifting or a wallpaper panel has fallen, determine why the adhesive released before attempting to reattach it. Photograph the product, the complete wall and the affected area before adding another adhesive.
