How to Hang Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Use this guide to install MotoMoms Decor Peel and Stick Fabric or Peel and Stick Canvas wallpaper. Careful wall preparation, correct panel order, and proper overlap will help you achieve a smooth installation and reduce the risk of adhesive failure.

Before You Begin: Check Your Wall

Your wall should be dry, clean, sound, and as smooth as possible. Peel and stick wallpaper may have difficulty adhering to heavily textured walls, damaged paint, residue, or paint that has not fully cured. If your wall was recently painted, wait at least 6 weeks before installation.

For a lightly textured wall, ROMAN E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper may improve adhesion. It is not a substitute for smoothing a heavily textured wall. If you are unsure whether your wall is suitable, contact us before installing your wallpaper.

Optional Installation Helper: ROMAN E-Z Hang

We recommend considering ROMAN E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper for Peel and Stick Fabric and Peel and Stick Canvas installations. Its spray-on formula provides some slip, making it easier to move a panel into position and align the pattern without repeatedly peeling it away from the wall. It can also improve adhesion.

ROMAN lists coverage at approximately 60 square feet per bottle. Check the total area of your panels to estimate how much you need, and follow the directions on the bottle. Adding an adhesion helper may affect how easily wallpaper can be removed later, so test it first if removability is important to you.

Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Wall

Remove dust, grease, and other residue from the wall. The surface must be completely dry before installation. If you use our enhanced adhesion cleaning method, first make sure the method is compatible with your paint and test it in an inconspicuous area.

Repair peeling paint or other unsound areas before hanging wallpaper. Do not apply wallpaper over a wall that is damp, dirty, or still curing after painting.

Step 2: Unpack and Check the Panels

At least 24 hours before installation, remove the panels from their packaging and unroll them. Keep the enclosed instructions. Lay the panels flat in the room where they will be installed, with the printed surface protected from dirt and damage.

Check the panel numbers and place the panels in left-to-right order. Look at the design across all panels to confirm that the pattern matches and that you have enough wallpaper to cover the wall. If anything looks incorrect, contact us before applying a panel.

Step 3: Plan the Starting Position

Begin at the left side of the installation area and work toward the right. Plan for approximately 1/2 to 1 inch of excess wallpaper at the top so you can trim along the ceiling after installation. Check that the panel will also reach the bottom of the wall before removing all its backing.

Having another person help you hold and align large panels can make installation easier.

Step 4: Install the First Panel

1. If using E-Z Hang, follow ROMAN’s directions: shake the bottle, then spray the wall section where the first panel will go. Work one section at a time.
2. Identify the top of Panel 1. Peel back only a few feet of the backing paper.
3. Position the panel at the upper left, leaving the planned excess at the ceiling. Check its position before continuing.
4. Gradually remove the remaining backing while smoothing the wallpaper onto the wall. Work carefully to push out air pockets and remove excess E-Z Hang before it dries.

If the panel starts to drift, pause and correct its position before applying the rest of it.

Step 5: Install the Remaining Panels

Continue with the panels in numbered order, moving from left to right. If using E-Z Hang, spray the next section of wall before applying each panel.

Overlap each new panel with the previous panel until the printed pattern aligns. MotoMoms Decor wallpaper panels include approximately 0.4 inches of overlap. Keep this overlap in place for peel and stick wallpaper. Do not cut it off before installation or place the panel edges directly next to each other, as that can create gaps or misalign the design.

Smooth each panel carefully and wipe away any excess installation helper before it dries, following ROMAN’s product directions.

Step 6: Trim the Perimeter

After all panels are positioned, use a sharp utility knife and a straightedge to trim excess wallpaper at the ceiling, baseboard, and outer edges of the installation area. Change the blade frequently so it cuts cleanly. Do not trim the overlap between peel and stick panels.

When to Choose Peel and Stick Wallpaper

• Feature walls and smaller projects: Peel and stick wallpaper is a convenient choice for a single accent wall or decorative area.
• Spaces where you may want a future change: It can be a useful option when you expect to change the design later. Removal results depend on the wall, paint, installation method, and length of time installed.
• Suitable smooth walls: A clean, sound, properly cured wall gives the adhesive its best chance to perform well.

When to Consider Another Material

• Heavily textured walls: Consider smoothing the wall or choosing a suitable prepasted or unpasted wallpaper.
• Bathrooms with showers or significant humidity changes: Ask us about prepasted or traditional unpasted wallpaper for your project.
• Long-term or high-traffic installations: A nonwoven prepasted or traditional unpasted material may be a better fit.
