Wall Decals Peeling Off the Wall? Here's What to Do

A lifting corner or a decal that has fallen can be frustrating. The first step is to check both the decal and the wall. Paint, texture, dust, moisture, and installation technique can all affect adhesion.

Why Do Wall Decals Peel?

Common causes include:

• Dust, grease, or cleaning residue on the wall
• Paint that has not fully cured
• Loose or peeling paint beneath the decal
• A textured surface that limits contact with the adhesive
• Some stain-resistant or highly washable paint finishes
• Humidity or significant temperature changes
• Stretching the decal during installation

Paint can feel dry before it is ready for adhesive wall decor. Wait at least 6 weeks after painting before applying MotoMoms Decor wall decals or peel and stick wallpaper.

If Only an Edge or Corner Is Lifting

1. Check the wall. Look for dust, moisture, loose paint, or texture where the edge is lifting.
2. Check the adhesive. If the back of the decal has collected lint or debris, pressing harder may not solve the problem.
3. Gently smooth the edge. Use a clean hand or soft cloth and press from the center of the decal toward the lifting edge. Avoid stretching the material.
4. Watch the area. If it lifts again, stop and contact us with photographs of the wall and decal before applying another adhesive.

A lifting edge may be a sign of a wall-surface issue. Adding an adhesive without addressing that issue may provide only a temporary fix and can affect future removal.

If the Decal Fell Off Completely

Keep the decal clean and inspect it for folds, tears, or debris on the adhesive. Do not throw it away. Photograph the decal, its adhesive side, and the wall where it was installed, then contact us. Tell us when the wall was painted and which decal material you ordered.

We can help you assess whether the decal can be reapplied or whether another material or replacement is needed. Reapplication is not always possible if the adhesive is contaminated or the decal has been damaged.

Vinyl and Fabric Decals Behave Differently

Cut vinyl decals are removable but generally are not reusable after installation. Thin vinyl can show the wall texture underneath and may stretch if pulled during application.

Self-adhesive fabric decals may be repositioned during installation, depending on the design and adhesive condition. Moving an installed decal later is less predictable, especially if its adhesive has collected dust or the wall paint is fragile.

Always follow the installation instructions for the specific product you received.

Should I Use an Adhesion Helper?

For some large fabric installations, an installation helper such as ROMAN E-Z Hang may be useful. Its suitability depends on the decal material and wall surface. Contact us before using it on a decal that is already peeling, and follow the product manufacturer's directions. Adding an adhesion helper may change how easily the decal can be removed later.

How to Reduce Adhesion Problems

• Wait at least 6 weeks after painting.
• Make sure the paint is firmly bonded to the wall.
• Clean and dry the wall before installation.
• Test a sample on the actual wall when compatibility is uncertain.
• Do not stretch the decal while positioning it.
• Follow the instructions for your decal's material and transfer method.
